A BARRY photographer is set to embark on a year-long project seeking to document Wales’ largest town.

Kevin Moore, 53, will begin his project, One Year In Barry, in September with the hope of creating more than 1000 images that will be archived online.

He is also planning on choosing a selection to be printed and framed for an exhibition which he hopes will take place in Barry in November 2018.

The project will involve Mr Moore shooting natural, non-staged photographs of Barrians – individuals and groups – going about their everyday lives and showcasing their unique skills and passions.

Mr Moore said he was keen to start on the non-profit, community project which will also involve him seeking to gather a minimum of £5,000 funding via business and public donations, and grant applications. With costs covered, excess money would be ploughed back into some of Barry’s charitable causes.

He said: “I’m looking for people, who would like to get involved, to contact me.

“I want to showcase the skills and talents that people have and capture the spirit and essence of the town – the highs, lows, trials and tribulations, fears and hopes, joys, hardships, and the successes.

“I want to feature people at a grassroots level and for there to be a real, permanent, record of life in Barry showcasing what in one year.”

The idea arose after Barry & District News reporter Sharon Harris saw the images Mr Moore was producing and admired the emotions and characters he portrayed.

Miss Harris, who has reported for the newspaper for a decade, said: “My news editor requested I attempt to get ‘people’ photos from our From The Archive feature.

“I had no problem finding images of buildings and places, but there was a distinct lack of scenarios involving people.

“I saw the photographs Kevin was producing and then had the idea.

“With social media, photos are plentiful but transitory.

“It’s like ‘scroll down 14 hours and you find an image, but will that be remembered in 2117? What permanent reminder will exist?

“Barry people live both ordinary and extraordinary lives and these need to be documented.

“Similarly, though there is a drive for online content there is still a need for people to feel they have been noticed, valued and connected. I’ve billed Kevin’s project: ‘One man, one camera, 1000 images’.”
