ST ATHAN Park charity ‘Saints’ hosted their second Family Fun Day last weekend, with the proceeds of the event going towards plans to build a new park in the area.

The event, which was free to enter, featured a wide variety of sports including tennis and cricket, while there were also a range of different animals on show.

There were also numerous children’s play activities, including a ride-on train, a soft play area and tea cups, along with arts and crafts sessions and refreshments on offer throughout the course of the afternoon.

Bro radio, the local PSCO, the RNLI and many local businesses and individuals attended. Over 500 people are believed to have come along to take part in the activities on show, who helped to raise a further £750 to go towards the ‘Saints’ long-term project to build the new park.

Having already raised £5,000 towards the park, funding for the project is now well underway and the final plans have also now been published by the group, who hope to make the proposals a reality in the very near future.

Saints treasurer & trustee Sally Gardiner said: “Last year the fun day really helped bring us closer to providing better play areas in St Athan.

“Money is incredibly tight but we are seeking funds from many different pots, from big and small business owners, local people, government and charity match-funding.

“We have already costed the park and the final design is in but money is only half the solution - getting the community engaged and keeping the momentum with the community spirit surrounding this project is just as important, so we hosted another fun day!”

The event took place on Saturday, August 5, between 12pm and 3pm at the St Athan Community Centre.
