THIS week the nostalgia section features Butlin’s Barry Island which came to the Nell’s Point headland site in 1965.
Billy Butlin was inspired to open his last and smallest holiday camp in Barry after a landlady locked him out of a Barry B&B in his youth
Mr Butlin took out a 99-year lease on the headland at Nell's Point in 1966 and building work started before the gates opened on June 18, 1966.
The Barry camp was built with Colonel Brown who was also the joint director of entertainment. He met Billy Butlin while he was with the army in Italy
A 430m chairlift system opened in 1967. There were 800 wooden panel, flat roof chalets designed to modern 1960s standards.
The camp boasted a funfair, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, dining hall, ballroom, boating lake, tennis courts, sports field, theatre, arcades of shops and the Pig and Whistle Showbar.
The camp was successful until the 1980s, but on October, 29 1986, Butlins announced it would close for good.
Doors shut on December, 31 1986.
