THE family of Barry rugby stalwart Gary Haigh have paid tribute to the well-known businessman.

Mr Haigh, former chairman of Barry RFC, was born in Barry and spent all his life in the town where he was also managing director of Pinit Building & Civil Engineering.

More than 700 people attended the funeral of the Romilly Park Road resident, including 100 past and present Barry RFC players who lined the streets and applauded his final journey.

A family spokesman said: “Gary played rugby for Barry RFC and when he retired from playing he supported the club and eventually became chairman.

"Through his 10 years as chairman he helped forge the club into the thriving part of the community that it is today.

"Through his company he carried out many improvements to the clubhouse which will now be a lasting legacy.

“As a mark of esteem in which he was held, his funeral at All Saints' Church was attended by around 700 people.

“It was fitting that Gary’s last journey should also take in the club that he had done so much for, and a poignant tribute was paid by members of the mini and junior section, players, coaches and parents who lined the driveway to the club and clapped him in and out on his last visit.

“As the funeral entourage reached the crematorium it was also met by 100 past and present players who lined the road and applauded his final journey."

Mr Haigh, who regularly sponsored charity events, ran Pinit Building & Civil Engineering with his wife, Karen.

Mrs Haigh has said she intends to carry on running the business for the foreseeable future.

The family spokesman added: "Gary will always be remembered as a gentleman who would help anyone he could and who was not afraid to show how much he loved his family.”

Mr Haigh died on October 9, following a long illness. He was 63.
