AIR Cadets from 372 (Barry) Squadron travelled to London to watch the Trooping the Colour full dress rehearsal for the Queen’s birthday parade, otherwise known as the Major-Generals review.

The three hour trip to London was worth the wait when cadets arrived at Horse Guards Parade, to watch the Colour of No 7 Company Coldstream Guards being trooped.

The parade was an inspiration to watch, carried out by fully trained and operational troops from the Household Division (Foot Guards and Household Cavalry) and the massed bands.

The Trooping the Colour ceremony dates back to the early 18th century when the colours (flags) of the battalion were carried (or trooped) down the ranks so that they could be seen and recognised by the soldiers.

Several of the cadets are also members of the squadrons own marching band; found the massed band section to be full of amazing music, and found ideas to improve their own routines.

Cadet Jenna Day said that it was: “Inspiring to watch the best bands, so that our own band can improve, this has been an amazing day out”.

After the parade, the cadets followed the Royal Air Force heritage trail through London, visiting the RAF Church of St Clements, Danes, the Royal Air Force and Bomber Command memorials and Battle of Britain monument on the Victoria Embankment as well as a visit to the Imperial War Museum.

The cadets who travelled to London were Sophie Thomas, Rhian Horton, Natasja Gill, Mo Hughes, James Jelinski, Dan Broadband, Alex Cheeseley, Connor James and Jenna Day.

The cadets are now looking forward to an action packed programme of flying, gliding, shooting, sports, training camps, visits and expeditions.
