AN AREA considered a ‘no go area’ and an ‘eyesore’ has undergone a radical transformation, thanks to a group of volunteers.

Gilbert Street residents, in Barry, had to suffer rubbish and evidence of drug use, but a spring clean and tidy has ensured the lane has had a facelift.

On Thursday, 7 April, young people from the Pulse Team – the Vale’s youth services – worked with Keep Wales Tidy and their local PCSO to clean-up the lane behind Gilbert Street, on Thursday, April 7.

Piles of rubbish had built up from fly tippers and people dumping household waste, and it had become a no go area for many.

There was also evidence of drug use in the lane as the clear-up operation uncovered drug paraphernalia.

Nine bags of waste were collected by the team as well as household items such as TVs, and car tyres, which were collected by the local authority.

40 bags of waste were recently collected from an area of land which is attached to the lane.

PCSO Rhiannon Cummings said: “The problem is that when the rubbish dumping starts, it can get worse very quickly as areas become no-go areas attracting fly tippers, and other kinds of anti-social behaviour. We’ve spoken to nearby residents and urged them to report anybody acting suspiciously. I’d like to thank Tim Wort from Keep Wales Tidy and all those from the Pulse Team.”
