A LARGE group of Friends and Neighbours enjoyed a tour and visit to the Welsh Assembly's Senedd.

They were greeted by Jane Hutt AM who introduced them to their guide for the duration of the tour.

They all then had to pass through airport style security who were very friendly and made them feel at ease as for some this was their first encounter of this system.

Following this Jane Hutt AM showed them some Second World War memorabilia from members of the Welsh Government Families including Jane Hutt's grandfather.

Afterwards they took the lift, which was totally made of glass, up to Chambers.

Their guide, who was both polite and enthusiastic and a breathe of fresh air, gave them an excellent account of how the Welsh Government worked, he talked about the Senedd which was built by Richard Rogers and built from Welsh materials both from Wales and New South Wales and how eco friendly it is.

Much significant architecture was pointed out and the meaning behind certain designs including the red curved cedar roof which is meant to represent the waves in Cardiff Bay.

They were then invited to have tea and coffee and Welsh cakes and ask Ms Hutt questions. Ms Hutt took the opportunity to ask members if they wished to sign the petition on the closure of the Barry Crown Post Office in Barry.

Talking about their visit Ms Hutt commented, "I thanked Gay Fifield for all her hard work as the chief volunteer for The Friends and Neighbours which provides activities and support for a growing number of people.

“Over tea we discussed local issues and all signed my petition to stop the closure of Barry Crown Post Office and I was also able to confirm I was meeting with Cardiff Bus to raise ongoing concerns about their 98 service in Barry. I will be holding a surgery at Age Connect on Friday, March 4 at 11.30am to follow up needs and issues."

Many members enjoyed walking around looking at pictures displayed by local artists and many bought small gifts from the gift shop.

The rest of the day was spent looking around Cardiff Bay and taking in the views, wandering around the many cafes and having lunch before they returned to Barry.

Transport was provided by Vale Emergency Transport Services.
