BARRY has a ‘tidy’ waterfront thanks to a clean-up operation involving police, fire officers and volunteers.

As part of last week's Keep Wales Tidy initiative, police officers, fire officers, and representatives from local charities and community groups, headed for the waterfront and over the course of just one morning they managed to collect 24 bags of rubbish from around the medical centre, the shops and the play area.

PCSO Rhiannon Harries, said: “It was great to see so many involved during the morning. Everybody worked hard and did their bit, and I hope local residents will notice and appreciate the hard work that went into brightening up their community. Hopefully it will encourage others to respect the area and keep it tidy.”

The initiative involved a number of agencies including South Wales Police, Scope, RAF Association, Youth Offending Service, Keep Wales Tidy, and local authority Visible Services.

Tim Wort, from Keep Wales Tidy, said: "It was great to see so many people come together to help with the clean up. A brilliant team effort has made a real difference to the area around the Medical Centre."

Denny White Senior Enforcement Officer at Vale's Visible Services, said: "Its wonderful to see all agencies working together for the good of the community.

"We would urge residents to remember littering can leave you liable to a £75 fine, and this anti-social behaviour can undo all the good work that is being done."
