VOLUNTEERS are needed to continue the work of the Vale of Glamorgan Libraries Home Library Service.

The service exists to get books and talking books to housebound readers and those who cannot get to the library to choose books for themselves.

Volunteers are needed from the Penarth/Llandough area and one to cover Rhoose and St Athan.

The commitment is around four hours a month and you visit the local library to choose books according to the reader’s taste, and then deliver them to the reader’s home.

You must own a car in order to transport the books and mileage is paid to volunteers.

All volunteers are interviewed, given DBS checks and issued with photo ID and are trained and supported by the library.

There are also vacancies for drivers in their latest service, the Pop-Up Library visits Care Homes and Sheltered Housing Schemes in Barry.

Currently operating on Friday’s only, but soon to extend to another weekday, the volunteer driver picks up a small van (Transit Connect size) from the Alps Garage in Wenvoe and brings it to Barry.

A member of staff will accompany you to three homes, where there will be loading and unloading of boxes of books for the residents and tenants to choose before returning the vehicle to the garage at the end of the day.

Again, the volunteer may claim mileage for using their own car to get to the Alps Garage and back.

If you are interested in volunteering please contact Andrea Griffiths at Barry Library on 01446 725381 or email ADGriffiths@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk.
