VALE AM Jane Hutt has announced details of a funding scheme supporting economically inactive people which could later be extended to the Vale of Glamorgan.

The new multi-million pound European funding scheme aimed at tackling poverty, social exclusion and unemployment in Wales was launched at a celebration of Europe Day.

Jane Hutt, in her role as Welsh Government minister for finance and government business, announced details of the new programme at the Europe Matters to Wales event held in Cardiff Bay.

The launch was hosted by Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) who will administer the Active Inclusion Fund on behalf of the Welsh Government, initially for projects running in West Wales and the Valleys supporting people over the age of 25 to move closer to the labour market.

Once in operation, there are plans for funding of projects working with people under the age of 25, and the scheme could also be later extended to the East Wales region - Flintshire, Powys, Monmouthshire, Newport, and Cardiff as well as the Vale.

The initiative will support first step activities for those furthest from the labour market, with a second strand providing paid, supported employment.
