CONCERNS have been raised that drivers are failing to pay attention to the new one-way system on Trinity Street.

Ward councillor Ian Johnson has warned drivers to pay attention to the new traffic system, after seeing vehicles driving the wrong way on the new one-way system when schools re-opened for the new term.

The Vale council are trialling a new one-way system on Trinity Street for the next six months. The new layout means it is one-way going downwards from the junction of Porthkerry and Montgomery Road until St Paul’s Avenue and one-way going upwards from the same junction to Jenner Road.

Plaid Cymru Councillor Ian Johnson monitored traffic in the school rush-hour on Monday morning (April 13) as schools returned for the new Easter term, and warned that drivers should take extra care to follow the new signs to ensure safety on the street.

“The new one-way traffic system has now been in place for a fortnight," Cllr Johnson said. "But many drivers are still ignoring the no-entry signs and driving the wrong way on the street.

“In the first quarter of an hour on Monday morning, I saw four vehicles go through a no entry sign and drive up the hill.

“A Vale of Glamorgan Council road safety officer then physically stopped vehicles from going up the hill, preventing another eight to 10 going upwards during the following half-hour.

“Other residents have told me that they have seen a similar number – around eight per half-hour.

“With residents, pedestrians and other drivers not expecting traffic from the wrong direction, this can be both scary and dangerous.

“I have asked local PCSOs to pay attention to the traffic there, particularly around school arrival and leaving times.

“This is a trial that will be in place for several months, so we won’t know exactly how it will impact on Trinity Street and surrounding streets for some time.

“However, a handful of drivers ignoring street signs make our roads far more dangerous, rather than safer.”
