DEMOLITION has began on Barry's iconic 111-year-old Rank Hovis mill, two years after ceasing production.

The work to take down the building, situated on Barry docks, is expected to be complete by the start of June.

Barry port manager Callum Couper said: "When demolition is complete the site will be returned to Associated British Ports.

"Its location, adjacent to the quayside, makes it ideal for a range of water related activities."

In July 2013 Hovis bread and Mr Kipling cakes firm Premier Foods announced closure plans for the factory, which then closed in October of the same year.

The Atlantic Mills site on the docks site was built in 1904 by the then Hovis-Bread Flour Company - Britain's largest flour miller, which has since been renamed Rank Hovis.

Despite efforts from local politicians to save the factory, housed in a large industrial building on Barry docks, it was closed as part of a shake-up of the Rank Hovis network, with 43 workers losing their jobs in Barry.
