ISN’T it a pity that the Vale of Glamorgan Council has missed a golden opportunity to transform “The Waterfront” into something other than another housing and supermarket development?
If only we had a few of Pembrokeshire County Council members on board the Vale planning committee, things could have been so much better for Barry.
“Plans for a £70m regeneration of Milford Haven dock which could create up to 600 jobs have moved a step closer. Outline planning permission has been granted for a mixed development of retail, leisure and commercial units to complement the docks”
On the subject of supermarkets, do we really need another supermarket of this size in the centre of Barry?
Prior to Morrisons coming to Barry Waterfront it was agreed, under section 106 of the Planning Obligations of the Welsh Local Authorities, that to lessen the impact such a large single retailer would have on the existing shopping areas of Barry, Morrisons would pay the Vale of Glamorgan Council £750,000 to improve the links between these existing shopping areas.
This money could then be used to pump prime extra funding from the Welsh Development Agency up to possibly £4.5 Million (Apart from the fact that the Vale of Glamorgan Council didn’t use it in time and had to pay it back to Morrisons).
Are there any plans for Asda to make a similar contribution as no doubt another supermarket of this size will have a considerable impact on the already depleted retail areas in Barry or are they just paying for the new Island link road?
