AN A-LEVEL pupil from a Barry air squadron has been appointed as Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet for South Glamorgan in 2015.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Jake Paterson received a distinctive sash with the badge of his appointment, which will last for one year, at an awards ceremony in Maindy Barracks, Cardiff.

17-year-old Jake is studying for his exams at St Cyres School, in Penarth.

He joined 372 (Barry) Squadron Air Training Corps four years ago and has since established himself as a model cadet.

He was nominated by cadet group leaders and the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Wales.

The role includes attendance with HM Lord-Lieutenant for South Glamorgan, Dr Peter Beck MA MD FRCP, who acts as the Queen’s representative, at a number of official engagements, including remembrance events, Royal visits and parades.

Jake said: “I feel great right now. I’m really looking forward to it, getting to meet new people and having the experience. I just didn’t expect it. Out of all the other potential candidates from our wing, I’m obviously very happy that I’ve got it.

“I can apply my skills in everyday life. I’ve got the confidence to stand up in front of people, I have done before and I’ve done speeches and assemblies to my school. Around the time in 2014 when we Remembrance Day coming up, I took a Year 8 assembly and told them how important it was to remember it as it was the centenary.”

Jake has set a high standard in achieving sports leaders awards, Duke of Edinburgh youth leader and silver award, 200 hours Millennium Volunteer award and his assistant basic expedition leader award.

Senior cadet Jake assists adult staff with training, prepares younger cadets for expeditions and runs sports nights.

Jake aims to use his skills from the cadets to become an RAF officer.
