WHEN Eileen Kiff was born, the First World War had been in progress since July 28 – ending on her fourth birthday, four years later.

Now, on Armistice Day – November 11 - as people commemorated the wartime centenary, Eileen celebrated her 100th birthday with family, friends and staff on the Sam Davies ward at Barry Hospital.

HRH, her majesty the Queen, Vale MP Alun Cairns and the Welsh Government also joined the many well-wishers to send 100th birthday cards.

Eileen said the secret of her long life was “contentment”.

Eileen, who was born in Oxford Street ,Barry, and attended High Street school before working in the Dock office on the counter issuing coupons. She was married Jack Kiff and has been best friends with Bronwen Price, 89, for more than 45 years.

She was a member of the Townswomen’s Guild for more than 25 years, and worked in WH Smith, Holton Road, as an assistant for 18 years.

Eileen said: “The secret of a long life is contentment – nothing to worry me – and wonderful friends. And my niece Karen (O’Sullivan) has been good to me.

“I’ve had a good day. I couldn’t wish for anything more.”

Bronwen said: “Everything about Eileen is special. She is wonderful. I don’t know what I would do without her. She’s got a wonderful family and they are very good to me.”

Niece Karen added: “She’s like an absolute real aunt to me. She’s easy going, very laid back.”

Eileen will continue her 100th birthday celebrations with family and friends at the Wenvoe Castle Golf Club, this Saturday, November 15.
