Extracts from the Barry & District

News of November 12, 1964:

l Following the recommendation of the Borough Engineer the Barry Town Council has decided that the practice of extending public street lighting during the period of the Christmas season be continued.

Arrangements are to be made for Main Street lighting to run on until dawn over the Christmas period and up to and including New Year's Eve.

l According to a spokesman of the Ministry of Transport a decision on the proposed closure of Forrest Drive, Barry Island, the subject of a recent inquiry, is likely to be known within a few days.

l The 40th annual show of the Barry and District Chrysanthemum Society, held at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday week and Thursday, was well up to the standard of its predecessors in the handicrafts section.

The main hall was transformed with a wealth of colour, and despite a troublesome spell of greenfly with which exhibitors had to contend there were some exceptionally fine blooms on show.

l Sites of two extinguished historical properties in Rhoose are to be marked by bronze plaques.

l A special meeting of the Public Works and Planning Committee was stood adjourned mid-way through on Thursday evening. Could it be that councillor and aldermen alike wanted to make a quick getaway to enable them to light their fireworks?

l Sea View Labour made a good start to this season's cup competitions when they beat Cardiff Combination League team Revenue Rovers by 16-3 in the first round of the South Wales and Mon. Amateur Cup.

l Penmark and Porthkerry Parish Councils are to borrow the sum of £5,000 towards the cost of the proposed £15,640 parish hall on land abutting Station Road and Stewart Road, Rhoose.

This was unanimously agreed at a joint meeting of the parish councils, attended by over 30 members of the public.

l Colcot Stars brought off a good win by 4-1 over Abercregan United, a Port Talbot team in the first round of the South Wales and Mon. Amateur Cup.
