THE Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is set to benefit from a share of £600,000 which will provide more eye care closer to people’s homes.

This funding boost is part of a wider £3.5 million package to improve primary care services in Wales.

The funding will free up hospital appointments for people with more serious conditions and help develop the skills of the primary care workforce.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board will receive funding for community based Eye Health Examination Wales accredited optometrists. They will provide post-operative care to cataract patients and provide casualty sessions in the hospital to improve their skills and free up ophthalmologist time. They will also appoint an optometric advisor to develop primary care optometry.
