THE renewed campaign for a children's play area in the Garden Suburb area of Barry has sparked a battle between those for and against a swing set on Marine Drive.

Parents and members of the Friends of the Garden Suburb group's desire for a safe and local park for their toddlers to play has met with objections from other residents of the area who say that it would attract teenagers and troublemakers.

These are the same objections that stunted the groups first attempt in January. It has also been brought to the Barry & District's attention that an individual has been posting copies of an article about the campaign through letterboxes warning people to "be vigilant".

However, group Chairman Vicky Roberts said that she has largely seen positive feedback since the article published two weeks ago.

"Since the article was published, all members of the group have received very positive support from neighbours and young and not so young people around Barry," she said.

"It would appear the main objectors are a small number who are anti-children and will not listen to our request. Just stirring up trouble."

There has been a massive reaction to the campaign online at the Barry & District website with many supporting Vicky's position.

One user "Barrian" wrote: "The reality is that generally only those that are opposed to these ideas get heard rather than those who support it or are indifferent.

"It is a nonsense to suggest that a small area such as this would be a catalyst for anti-social behaviour. I lived close to such a play area and can only say from my experience that the play area was fantastic for the children. Come on VoG, why not do something positive. It is clear that you have a strong active community, why not support them."

Another user "Nsturgess" wrote: "What is so controversial about installing a swing set in our community that our children will benefit from? Why on earth do some people have to focus on the negative? Get a grip and a positive outlook on life, who knows what could happen? Hey you may be disturbed by the wonderful sound of children laughing."

The opposition argument is reflected in the comments of user "El Diablo" who wrote: "It is not the toddlers the residents are afraid of. It is the gathering of teens who can be seen now on the play equipment in the field behind Salisbury Road, in the area known locally as 'The Dump'.

"Many times I have had to unwind the swings in order for my grandchildren to play on the swings, and clean away the cigarette ends. This along with the broken drinks bottles and used condoms deters younger people from the area, and adults from bringing their children there.

"The meeting held to ascertain the need and demand for this play area proved overwhelmingly that it was not needed or wanted."

The Vale council has commented that, despite the group having funding, they are unable to provide land for a play area due to the "overwhelming opposition from the local community" exhibited at meetings earlier this year.
