A BARRY grandmother has proved herself a ‘number one’ friend by having her hair shorn to raise money to help a young couple in need.

Lisa Crockett, 45, opted for a full number one administered by hairdresser Gemma Farmer at the Hair & Beauty Den, on Thompson Street, on Monday, September 22 – and has so far raised more than £540 to help Lizzy Morrison and her partner Lloyd Morris whose baby Layla Marie tragically died 22 minutes after she was born on August 23.

Mum-of-one Lizzy and Lloyd were faced with the unexpected financial burden of their daughter’s funeral, but the kind-hearted Barry community has rallied with support taking part in a variety of fundraising events to help Layla’s parents give her funeral she deserved on September 4.

The family needed £2,500 to cover the costs and have pledged to help out the family accommodation – where they spent precious time with Layla for five days after her death – with any money left over in appreciation of the care they received.

Lizzy’s mum Alison Morrison, 45, will raise money by having a number five haircut in Caerphilly while Lisa did the deed this week.

Lisa said: “I thought I would be little bit nervous, but I was fine until the last hour and then, my stomach. I had a double vodka and will probably go to the pub afterwards.

“I’ve got a lovely wig off one of my customers and some headscarves.

“The way the community has responded has been amazing.”

Senior stylist Gemma Farmer, who has looked after Lisa’s hair for 10 years, said it was the first time she had shaved a woman’s hair.

“I was nervous,” she said. “I was shocked when she told me, but I’m proud of what she’s doing.”

Family friend, Shirley Thompson, who watched the cut being done, said: “It always feels weird when you’ve got a new hairdo, but I’m proud of her.”

Layla’s mum Lizzy, who also turned out to support Lisa, added: “I’m gobsmacked. She’s amazing.”

Any contributions to Lisa’s head shave, can be taken to Silverline, on Holton Road, from 9am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday.
