RHOOSE resident Ruth Haynes recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

Celebrations began on Saturday, March 1, when Ruth entertained friends and neighbours with afternoon tea.

Festivities continued on her birthday, Monday, March 3, when family members gathered to celebrate with her. Her daughter and son-in-law and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were joined by Ruth’s cousins and nieces for lunch and afternoon tea (Ruth’s daughter Anne, who lives in the USA, was unable to be there due to ill health but will visit her mother later in the year).

A highlight of the day was the arrival of the Queen’s card delivered personally to Ruth by postman Matthew Danks. She also received flowers, cards and e-messages from all over the UK and also the USA, Malta and Brunei.

Her birthday has raised a substantial sum for Macmillan Nurses because she asked family and friends for donations in lieu of gifts.

Ruth moved to Wales with her husband Gwyn and her parents, from Plymouth in 1975, joining her daughter Jill and son-in-law Steve on Barry Island.

There Ruth and Gwyn took up sequence dancing and made many friends at the various venues they attended in Barry and the surrounding area. In 1983 the family moved to Nurston, Rhoose where they have remained ever since.

Ruth is now a member of the Rhoose Darby and Joan club and she hosted a party to celebrate her birthday with fellow members on Monday, March 10.
