WE have had a great response from our looking back photograph of November 2.

The photograph was sent in by Michael Quick, a boxing memorabilia collector from Plymouth.

It was found in a box of photographs he had bought and it had our address on the back.

After a search on the internet, Mr Quick found our site and e-mailed the photograph to us, asking if readers could help him put names to faces.

First to contact us was Billy Stacey, a former amateur Welsh boxing champion from Barry, who told us the names of the boxers and trainers in the picture.

Next Mr Stacey's brother, Trevor, a former Royal Marines boxing champion, wrote us a letter from his home in Essex.

He also named the men and told us the photograph reminded him of other boxers from that generation - such as his brother Billy, Les Jones, Bob Burniston, and Henry Brown.

Mr Stacey said there were quite a few others and every one of them was a gentleman.

Lee Campbell, of Daniel Street, was the next person to contact us with information about his grandfather Joe Williams (second left).

He told us Joe was a big crowd puller in his early amateur career and was beaten by Dennis Reardon (second right) in the 1937 Welsh middleweight final.

Mr Campbell added he believes this photograph could have been taken on that night.

Reardon went on to win the gold medal at the 1938 Empire Games (forerunner to the Commonwealth Games) in Sydney, beating England's Maurice Dennis in the final.

Joe Williams' career was interrupted, by to the outbreak of World War II.

On returning he became Welsh middleweight champion in 1945 and retired to become a trainer based at the Osborne Boxing Club in Cadoxton.

In 1949 he was awarded the Western Mail trophy for producing the most Welsh champions in one season.

He went on to guide the careers of boxers, including Dave Williams, the only boxer to fight for and win two Welsh championships in the same night - winning the light-heavy and heavyweight titles.

Mr Campbell brought in another photograph, showing boxers Joe trained, as well as posters from the era naming the boxers on the bill.
