A SHORT film about the last moments of three Battle of the Somme soldiers as they write final letters home will feature during Barry’s Wartime Weekend.

During the battle of the Somme, the Welsh were known for their assault on Mametz Wood and the tragedy and triumph which followed.

The first day of the Battle saw the Welsh also at Beaumont Hamel fighting alongside the Newfoundlanders.

The film shows the soldiers, from different backgrounds, and what they decide to write home in what could become their final letters.

Penned by Jacqueline Swift, also known as Jaye Swift, of Llantwit Major, Letters Home initially started its life as a short play in 2012 at Pontardawe ScriptSlam and it went on to win the audience award.

She adapted it to a screenplay which reached the semi-finals of the London Underwire Festival, and was chosen for a rehearsed reading at the London Screenwriters Festival.

Ms Swift, along with co-producer Oli Curry decided to bring the film to life by producing it themselves in the spring of 2014.

All the cast and crew are either Welsh or live in Wales.

Letters Home was filmed entirely on location in Sigingston and Morfa Bay, Pendine and screened July, 1 at Pontardawe Art Centre.

It formed part of the 100th commemorations remembering those who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The 22-minute long, short film will be screened four times during the Barry Wartime Weekend on the Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4.

Screenings will be at noon and 3pm on Saturday and 10.45am and 1.15pm on Sunday.
