Wanderers back on song again

VALE Wanderers ended last season by winning both Barry Carnival and Seaview football tournaments, and that winning form continued with a good display against a talented St Athan side.

Playing against the wind in the first half, Vale kept good possession and almost took the lead with efforts from Haydn Leek, Josh Bryan and Mathew Cahill.

St Athan used the wind to their advantage and pushed forward at every opportunity, but Vale defenders Arron Williams, Jacob Constant, Daniel Bartlett, Daniel Jones and Ryan Hall stood firm and when needed keeper Callum Harding made some fine saves.

Both teams played extremely good football, and used the ball well. Vale's midfield of Luke Oeppen, Nathan Whitehead, Chris Booker, Max Webb and Lewis Hoare looked composed on the ball and made several attacking opportunities down the flanks.

In the second half, both sides had a number of chances with Vale's Lewis Hoare and Tee-Jay Caton coming close.

Near the end of the game, Nathan Whitehead calmly grabbed the winner and the points for Vale.
