DISCUS ace Brett Morse has said he is very happy to have been named in the Great Britain team for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow next month.

The former Stanwell and St Cyres pupil, who reclaimed his British Championships title from 2010 on the weekend, announced the news on Facebook.

He threw a best of 62.05m to take gold by nearly eight metres at Sainsbury, which meant he met all the criteria for an automatic selection into the squad, but he couldn’t match the 66.84m personal best (PB) he set in Cardiff last month.

The PB ensured he had the ‘A’ Standard throw needed to be selected, but he said he felt he was in shape to throw better again.

“I’m in much better shape than I’ve shown here and training has been going well,” said the 24-year-old after the championships on Sunday. “I really think I’m in the condition to get a big personal best in Moscow.

“I came 12th at the worlds two years, but when I made the finals it was a bit of a shock because I was the youngest athlete there by quite a way.

“I’m definitely a stronger athlete now, mentally and physically, and I’m better technically. I want to make the final at least, and improve on my final position from two years ago.

“I want to say a big thankyou to SHS Scaffolding. They have been a huge help to me over the last year.”

Morse will be joined by fellow Welshmen Dai Greene and Rhys Williams on the 60-strong squad.

He is the only discus thrower chosen.

Leading the charge for medals in Russia will be double Olympic champion Mo Farah who will be attempting to become the first Briton to retain a world title The championships take place from August 10 to 18.
