THE Vale of Glamorgan felt the force of Storm Eunice today – as 72mph winds hit along the coast and, while some people believe it has not been as bad as expected, a number of incidents caused disruption.

The roof of a house extension was blown off on Colcot Road in Barry and a petrol station’s roof was damaged on Pontypridd Road.

 

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: “At around 10.50am, South Wales Police received reports of a roof being blown off an extension of a residential property on Colcot Road, Barry.

“The debris landed near the road and has since been removed.

“No one was injured.”

There was also an incident on Thompson Road in Barry where solar panels and concrete blocks falling from a building onto a car.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: “At around 12.20pm, South Wales Police received reports of solar panels being removed by the wind at an address in Thompson Street, Barry.

“The panels landed on a car which was contained in a car park. Officers are in attendance to keep people away from the building.

“No one was injured.”

150 homes have been without power for the afternoon, with Western Power expected to restore power to 82 homes in Cowbridge by 5pm and to the 68 homes close to Llantwit Major by 6pm.

Other than this, it seemed the storm provided more inconvenience than damage.

Public transport in Wales was suspended throughout the morning, with buses returning to their routes across the Vale from 2pm. Trains remain suspended until tomorrow morning when it is hoped they will resume but this will be assessed in the morning.

All Vale of Glamorgan schools were closed today and went to online learning while bin collections were also suspended and will be carried out on Saturday, should it be safe to do so.

A flood warning was issued for the coast at Swanbridge and Barry alongside a flood alert from Aberthaw to the Severn Bridge, covering the Vale’s coastal areas and Cosmeston and Porthkerry parks were closed.

Libraries and other council buildings were also closed and are set to re-open on Monday.

The poor weather is set to continue tomorrow as a yellow weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office between 6am and 6pm. The Met Office is predicting highs of 45mph for Barry and 43mph for Penarth.

This has led to the cancellation of Barry RFC's Islanders taster day for women and girls which was due to take place tomorrow.
