WALES stretched away in the final quarter for a 44-28 victory against Fiji in a topsy-turvy World Rugby U20 Championship clash.

It was a chaotic game in which neither side seemed able to clear their lines after scoring with the Welsh youngsters edging it largely thanks to their tight game.

Ten tries were traded, Wales scoring six and Fiji four, and control was sorely lacking until late tries eased the nerves of those in red.

Wales headed into the game knowing that their semi-final hopes had been dashed by their loss to champions France but needing to win to ensure they took part in the play-offs for fifth to eighth rather than the bottom rung.

They achieved that and now wait to learn their opponents on Monday.

Wales, playing on the grass of Santa Fe rather than the plastic of Rosario for the first time, made a fast start to go 5-0 after five minutes.

TMO and hooker Dewi Lake was deemed to have been just short from a driving lineout but a penalty was kicked back to the corner and it was Leicester flanker Tommy Reffell that went over.

But back came Fiji with a classic score, centre Ilaisa Droasese gathering a grubber and racing away from his own half before putting lock Taniela Ramasibana galloping over for a converted try.

Dragons scrum-half Dafydd Buckland responded swiftly with a quick tap from a scrum penalty to cross from five metres, fly-half Cai Evans adding the extras for a 12-7 lead.

Wales were struggling for control and centre Taniela Soqonawasaloa exposed a midfield gap between lock Jac Price and prop Nick English to scoot over to make it 14-12 after 19 minutes.

The Welsh youngsters were unable to make their scrum dominance count on the scoreboard but in the 33rd minute Ioan Davies was hit by a no-arms tackle as he attempted to get back to his feet after sliding to gather.

Referee Pali Deluca deemed it was worthy of a red card for number eight Eparama Sailo but was talked out of it by his TMO but Wales still made the most of the yellow card.

Evans boomed over a superb penalty to earn the lead back and then wing Tomi Lewis finished superbly, Evans adding the conversion to make it 22-14 at half-time provide some breathing space.

But that was gone eight minutes after the restart when the Welsh backs' defence was shredded from quick lineout ball for wing Kaminieli Rasaku to go over.

Simione Kuruvoli's conversion made it a one-point game but a superb Reffell jackal allowed Wales to go back to the corner and after two drives forced a yellow card it was Lake that went over with Evans converting to make it 29-21.

But Wales' defence once again let them down with Rasaku going over for his second almost straight from the restart, the conversion making it 29-28 approaching the hour.

Fiji were shared their inability to exit their own territory but Lewis was denied a second when he went into touch stretching for the line.

However, they eventually got their score through the tight game with replacement prop Ben Warren powering over and Evans converting for 36-28 and Dragons wing Deon Smith set up Ioan Davies for the clincher.
