THERE was success for Welsh gymnasts at the recent Men’s and Women’s Artistic British Championships - including a medal for Barry YMCA's Clinton Purnell.

In the Men’s Artistic Masters Apparatus Finals, Clinton took a hard-earned bronze in the vault with a score of 15.237.

And there were gold, silver and bronze medals for young Welsh gymnast and St Cyres pupil Angel Romaeo.

Angel and her teammates Raer Theaker, Kiera Brennan of Barry, and Georgina Hockenhull dominated the Women’s Artistic Junior events, securing three individual apparatus titles and taking home six medals from the competition, which ran from June 22 to 24 at Liverpool’s Echo Arena.

In the all-around competition on Friday, June 22, Angel - competing for Cardiff Central Youth Club - managed four consistent scores to secure a second place and silver medal with a score of 52.650. (English gymnast Gabrielle Jupp finished ahead of Angel with 54.300.) “I am very pleased with myself," said the 14-year-old St Cyres pupil.

I went for clean performances and the results showed that."

The youngster also qualified and competed in the individual apparatus finals on Sunday, June 24. Performing a new floor routine, Angel won gold with 13.850!

Cardiff Central team mate Raer Theaker came in 3rd with 13.650.

Angel also picked up two bronze medals in bars and beam. The latter title was won by Georgina Hockenhull competing for Park Wreking, who scored 13.450, while Raer added gold to her bronze, winning the vault final for the second year in a row with a score of 13.850.

Raer was also joint winner of the highest score award in the vault qualifications on the Friday.

Kiera Brennan, representing Barry YMCA, narrowly missed out on a bronze in the vault by 0.25 of a mark.

“British gymnastics put on a fantastic weekend,” said National Coach Tracey Skirton-Davies.

"Our juniors gained valuable experience in preparation for their Commonwealth and Olympic campaigns in 2014 and 2016 respectively."

And in her first British Championships competing as a senior, Jess Hogg came 4th in the vault, narrowly missing out on a bronze in what was a strong field, and came 13th in the all-around.
