Sully Sports 30 SEA VIEW 3

Sea View RFC last Saturday visited local rivals Sully Sports RFC hoping to build on their recent victory against Tongwynlais,

A beautiful sunny day and the prospect of open running rugby saw a large crowd gather in Sully.

Sully Sports showed intent from the kick off to play explosive rugby with a powerful pack. They proved a dominant unit in the scrummage giving the Seaview front row Wayne Burston Steve Davies and Trevor Heulin a torrid time. On many occasions scrum half Dai Harris was glad to watch the View number 8 John Blake pick up at the base and make valuable yards supported by his back row team mates Leon Ford and Chris Taylor.

This pattern defined the first half with Daniel Glennie at fly half seeing little ball and forced to use all his skills to release an eager back line. When the View ventured into the Sully half they rocked their defence with both Damion Huggins and Lee Howells running good lines in midfield. The View wingers Ross Adams and Joe spent the majority of the first half in a defensive support role. Joe Perry at full back was often glad of their support in stemming the ever-increasing volume of Sully attacks breaking the gain line.

There were many glimpses of the talent and skill that the View has in a strong and determined squad. A mobile and unwavering pack got to grips with the job at hand and gave an excellent account of themselves.

The backs also stepped up to the line and gave no quarter, tackling with determination and clearing their lines with confidence. Given the chance to attack they stretched the Sully defence to its limit. The first half saw Damion Huggins on good form with the boot, capitalising on an early Sully infringement, converting the resulting penalty comfortably.

The reply was quick and emphatic from Sully with an unconverted try from a dominant pack. So a close half of quality rugby played in typical Derby fashion saw both teams paying deserved respect to each other. Half time score Sully 5, The View 3.

The second half kicked off in much the same fashion with Sully piling on the pressure and scoring a quick try. This set the tempo for the half, Sully applying pressure from all parts of the pitch. A penalty opportunity to bring the score to 10-6 was missed by the View, and this was all the motivation Sully needed to make their pressure count.

The View replacements gave the team a much needed boost in defence Gareth Lowes, Rhys MacAloon and Rhys Swinfen adding some much needed grunt up front, with Ben Cotter, Danny Morris and Reth Davies complementing the backs. Scoring a further three tries Sully closed out a fantastic display of power and flowing rugby.

Final score Sully RFC 30, Sea View RFC 3.

The View gained compliments from many in the Sully ranks and will welcome the opportunity to take revenge in their home fixture next year.

After the match both sets of players enjoyed the hospitality of the Sully Sports Club. The View won the somewhat untraditional ‘Boat Race’ by a ‘Twix’. This local derby will surely be a welcome and hard fought fixture on the View calendar for many seasons to come. This Saturday View are away at 3rd in the table Cathays RFC in what promises to be another hard game.

Off the field there’s a Halloween on October 31 at our Dock View Road Clubhouse, Kids party during the day followed by a Karaoke for the 'grown-ups'. full details on the website www.seaviewrfc.co.uk. Everybody welcome!
