BARRY Athletic Bowls Club faced another double header last Saturday as the first team travelled to St Fagans whilst the second team hosted ‘The Fags’ second team at the 4Wood Green.

Both games kicking off at an earlier time of 10am to ensure a finish in time for Wales opening Euro 2020 match.

The firsts got off to a steady start on a heavy but true green.

The rink of Russell Harris, Scott Howell, Peter Rogers and Martin Clarke-Squires found their rink to their liking as they managed to lead by double figures throughout.

Despite losing the last 6 ends (all 1 shot) they still managed to record a 20-13 success and top rink honours in the process.

The other rinks proved to be much more cagey affairs with the leads switching between the home and away rinks throughout.

However a strong finish by the Stags on their final ends and a wonder bowl by Barry Skip Rhys Phillips meant that Barry went away with an 8 shot victory and another 12 points in the bag.

The firsts now turn their focus to the heavyweights of the second division as they host Beaufort on Saturday 19th June.

Rink Scores:

R Harris, S Howell, P Rogers & M Clarke-Squires 13-20

J Killin, A Dickens, R Fleming & D Wright 17-17

P Gray, C Wright, G Whittaker & R Horgan 20-20

P Killin, L Paige, C Best and R Phillips 16-17

St Fagans (2) 66-74 (12) Barry Athletic

The Second team maintained their 100% win ratio this season as they steamrollered their way to another victory over the visiting St Fagans.

The Athletic managed to record 2 winning rinks out of the 3 with the quartet skipped by Tim Morgan and featuring new bowler Paul Clarke romping to a 31-14 victory.

The other winning rink was skipped by seasoned campaigner Albert Mintern whilst Fred Phillips and his rink had a disappointing finish to go down by 6 shots.

Rink Scores:

K Brookes, D Brookes, A Compton & F Phillips 17-23

DL Jones, P Clarke, J Best & T Morgan 31-14

C Phillips, T Collins, A Cooper & A Mintern 17-15

Barry Athletic (6) 65-52 (0) St Fagans

All in all another good weekend for the Athletic who are slowly starting to get into their strides whilst managing to give debuts to a lot of new players.
