ON Sunday, September 13, the Welsh Pétanque Association held the National Doubles Championship at Pontyclun Pétanque Club.
Jean-Yves Robic represented the newly formed South Wales Bowls and Recreation Centre – Sully Pétanque Club and played with Ian Bailey (Maesteg PC).
After 5 rounds of pool games, they were at the top of Pool 2 and qualified for the semi-finals. In the semi-final, they faced local pair Matthew and Hugh Morris.
After a slow start, Jean-Yves and Ian cruised to a 13-3 victory and booked their place in the final against a strong pair from Caerleon composed of Kon Tomczyk and Richard Harris.
Playing on a really difficult terrain, the Caerleon team built up a comfortable lead and were 9-2 up after 7 ends.
But Jean-Yves and Ian stayed in the game, slowly eroding the lead of the Caerleon pair to finally take a narrow 11-10 advantage.
The momentum had now changed and Jean-Yves and Ian claimed the 2020 title 13-10.
