ON September 19 Brynhill Golf Club will stage this year’s Glamorgan County Championship, a 36-hole event that will bring together the very best of the county’s golfing talent, to battle it out over the magnificent Barry course.

There are team prizes of course but being individual County Champion is what these players really covet most.

It has been a while since a Brynhill Boy won it, in fact we have to go back to 1991 when Leon Warne beat Bradley Dredge in a play-off at Neath.

Leon now head pro at Pontypool GC, is a product of the John Collins Junior Section at Brynhill, a group that seemed to have a conveyor belt of promising junior talent, many of whom went on to turn professional, as teaching and tour pros.

Last year this event was staged over the World renowned links of Royal Porthcawl, so it is a massive feather in the cap of course manager Matt Borges who, together with his team, have worked so hard to get the Barry course in tournament condition and nice for the town of Barry host such a prestigious competition.
