AT the end of August, the Ladies Championship final took place at Brynhill golf course.

After the terrific downpours of the previous weekend the day dawned dry and sunny. All breathed a sigh of relief.

Lisa our resident weather woman forecast a good fine day which proved to be correct.

The Ladies Championship match was played over 36 holes, 18 holes in the morning and 18 holes in the afternoon.

The spectators assembled on the 1st tee waiting for the finalists to appear.

The club president Hilary West announced the ladies who were Claire Downton and Sam Pascoe.

Their caddies were Carole Allen and Ann Phillips with referee Jan Robertson.

A somewhat one-sided morning 18 holes saw Claire going into lunch 7 up.

The players, caddies and spectators enjoyed a light lunch.

When the afternoon 18 holes commenced, Sam (a Welsh international hockey player), showed her true fighting spirit and golf prowess by pulling the match back to all square.

However Claire dug in very deeply and on the 15th hole went two up and won the match on the 16th hole 3 & 2.

The afternoon also saw the 18 hole final of the Diack between Lisa Taylor (Ladies vice captain) and Helena Coombes who was defending her title from the previous year.

Their caddies were Andrea Page and Glynis Gould with referee Linda Hewlett.

Again spectators assembled and thoroughly enjoyed this very closely fought match, with Lisa finally winning with a birdie 2 on the 16th hole. 3 & 2

The evening celebrations were held in true Brynhill Ladies style.

The Ladies captain Jo Kirkpatrick congratulated all the finalists as they qualified to get to the final after many rounds of knockout competitions.

Jo also thanked all the caddies and referees and all the ladies who supported the finalists.

She also gave a huge vote of thanks to Matt Borges and his green keeping staff, also the catering and bar staff.

Jo thanked Hilary the club president and club captain Jamie Griffiths for all their support.

A meal was enjoyed by all followed by some very emotional speeches.

The wine flowed and the evening ended with the Ladies captain presenting the finalists with beautiful flowers.
