THE Mixed Open competitions at Wenvoe Castle are usually very well supported and on Sunday the Club was delighted to host a field of over 100 entries with players from throughout the south Wales region and as far afield as the Midlands and south west of England.

The golf course continues to be in superb condition and the only concern was the changeable weather might bring sunshine or rain on the day.

While breezy conditions at times added to the challenge overall the competition was played in excellent conditions.

Jeff and Pamela Williams of Radyr Golf Club posted the highest score in the visitors category winning with 36 points.

It was a very close affair with the runners up Steve and Sharon Foster (West Mon Golf Club) just a single point behind on 35 points and just holding off Geoff and Margaret Medlow (Pontypridd Golf Club) on countback.

Viv and Lyn Williams recorded the highest score of 34 points by Wenvoe Castle members but needed countback to stay ahead of Rob and Lynda Campbell who took second place. Meirion Evans and Sheila Morrow also scored 34 points but again countback dropped them to third place by the narrowest of margins.

Hayley Rallings (Monmouthshire Golf Club) won the prize for Ladies nearest the pin on the 2nd hole the ball ending up just 36 inches from the hole. Paul Edwards (Glamorganshire Golf Club) won the Men’s competition for nearest the pin on the 200-yard, par 3, 13th hole with his ball just under 17 feet from the hole.

Despite the huge entry there were just 3 ‘twos’ recorded, and the winning pairs received a decent haul of 16 golf balls each.

The prizes were presented by club vice president Colin Champ who thanked all the competitors for supporting the competition particularly those who had travelled a considerable distance.

Wendy Motton was thanked for efficiently organising the event who in turn appreciated the contribution by the Ladies involved with the administration on the day.

The green staff were complimented on the outstanding condition of the course and the bar and catering staff were thanked for their excellent service throughout the long day.
