SULLY Sports Bowls Club travelled the short distance to Penarth Winsor for a friendly on Wednesday, 1st May. The game was played in the best of spirits, and very very close on 3 rinks, but in the end the Winsor triumphed on 3 rinks, with the 4th ending up a draw.

K Aguis’ rink led for the 1st 6 ends, and never managed to get back in front again, and although taking 5 shots on the final 2 ends, it wasn’t enough, and they went down by 3 shots.

Lee Romans’ rink took the lead on the 5th end, led by 7 shots after the 10th, lost the lead on the 15th, regained it on the penultimate end, only for the home rink to score 2 shots on the last and clinch a 1 shot win.

Bob Matthews rink led early on, and at the halfway point were a shot up, but a very strong final 9 ends saw the home rink power to a comfortable 13 shot win.

G Brown’s rink was so closely contested, with the lead changing hands 8 times, before a dramatic last few ends resulted in an honourable draw.

On Saturday, 4th May, Sully Sports made another short journey for their friendly against the Murch. The Green was in excellent condition, although very heavy, and the sunshine kept the players warm. The Sports gained their first victory of the season by 68 – 54, but honours were somewhat even as both sides registered wins on 2 rinks.

Although the scores were always close, K Aguis’ rink led for most of the game, and led by a shot with 3 ends left, but some terrific home bowls saw the Murch rink score 9 shots and pinch victory from the jaws of defeat.

The scores were even after 6 ends on K Romans’ rink, but a 4 on the 7th for the Murch gave them a lead that they desperately defended for the rest of the game, and despite the Sports winning the last 3 ends, it was by a shot each time, and the gap was big enough to give the home rink victory.

On C Coomber’s rink the lead changed hands 4 times in the 1st 12 ends, at which point the home rink were 4 shots ahead, but the Sports rallied to win the next 5 ends, and although losing the last by a shot, to record a 4 shot win.

G Brown’s rink put in the performance of the day, only losing 4 ends, and scoring 9 shots on the final 3 ends, put the icing on the cake ensuring an overall aggregate win for the Sports.

Rink Scores:

A Thompson, D Davies, G Currie, G Brown 27-05;

B Knight, D Austin, B Whyman, K Agius 12-20;

A Fitt, P Collier, L Adams, K Romans 12-16;

P Holland, J Pearce, A Collard, C Coomber 17-13.
