KIERAN Gething had to overcome more than most on his way becoming a champion fighter in boxing’s professional ranks earlier this month.

For when the 24-year-old claimed the Welsh super-lightweight crown in Newport it was nearly five years to the day that dad Gary took his own life.

The tragic loss of his father at the age of just 54, several injury setbacks and defeat in a title fight last October made that February 2 victory over Henry Janes extra special for Gething.

In recognition of his achievements, those closest to him have nominated the dad-of-two for the Professional Sports Personality of the Year gong as part of the South Wales Argus Sports Awards.

Chepstow Racecourse hosts this year’s ceremony on May 22 when the great and good of Gwent sport will congregate to honour the region’s standout individuals, teams and clubs.

Gething’s sister Danielle O’Leary said of her brother: “Kieran has worked hard and dedicated himself to winning a Welsh title nearly five years to the day we lost our father in tragic circumstances.

“He won the BBBoC fight of the year for very narrowly losing to Tony Dixon and then went on to win the super-lightweight title in February.

“Kieran has also organised several charity events to promote the discipline of boxing and trains and coaches children at the local gym in Pontypool.”

Gething’s wife Emma added: “He won the Welsh super-lightweight title in his last fight after losing his previous fight for the title a division above in a contest awarded fight of the year.

“He owns a coaching licence to help at his local gym when needed and tries to broaden the influence of mental health in his sport.”
