SULLY Indoor Bowls Club played their first home game of the season at Sully Stadium against Newport IBC who they have struggled against over a five-year long period.

Sully lost their opening game against Rhondda, although this was expected it didn't help with four players dropping out just prior to the game.

With the Sully Stadium in the throws of exciting changes it is hoped the Stadium team will reverse their poor results of recent years and with the return of Matthew Woodcock and current Welsh international Martin Clarke-Squires there is plenty of optimism within the club.

On Saturday the visit of Newport was generating a buzz within in the team and there was a genuine confidence of a victory.

The game began with Sully in buoyant mood and this was proved with Sully holding seven shot advantage by the fifth end.

The game was proving to be very competitive as one would expect against a strong side like Newport but Sully were up for the fight as they continued to the tenth end the score remained in the home side's favour leading by Nine 53 - 44.

The game was tense with both sides playing well but Sully continued to hold the advantage at by the end of the fifteenth and had extended their lead to 19.

The rink of Bob Matthews/Paul Gunter/Tony Frowd and skip Chris Ackland were leading a strong Newport rink skipped by Tom Nicholls 17 - 7 helping the Sully cause.

The final six ends were always going to be difficult as Sully were expecting a Newport fightback and this was the case as Newport narrowed the gap to six by the eighteenth end but Sully were proving resilient and kept their concentration to win the game by eleven shots 111 - 100.

With four winning rinks Sully gained 18 points to Newport's 4.

This was a superb result for Sully and with Ogwr at home on this Saturday 27th Sully are expecting another win which should move them into the mix. Rink results:
