Tynewydd FC 3-1 Ystrad Rugby

TYNEWYDD FC, representing the Vale of Glamorgan League, made only their 2nd appearance in the South Wales Intermediate Cup on Saturday coming up against Ystrad Rugby from the Rhondda.

Tynewydd have had a mixed bag of start to their 18/19 campaign with 2 wins, 2 losses and a draw and knew they were in for a stern test against a young Rugby team who topped their respective league in the Valleys.

Tynewydd made a horror start to the game and conceded after only 5 minutes with an unusual defensive lapse at the back left the Rugby striker clean through on goal.

Ystrad buoyed by their early goal began to knock the ball around quite freely, but their over confidence cost them as Elliot Hicks pounced on an error at the back and fired in an unstoppable shot from outside the box, Hicks keeping up his mantle of only scoring screamers having scored a pearler when Tynewydd defeated Cadoxton Imps 4-1 earlier in the season.

The equaliser rocked Rugby and Tynewydd began to dominate the game but couldnt take advantage of their superior domination with the half ending 1-1

Both sides entered the 2nd half knowing the next goal would be crucial and Tynewydd had goalkeeper Callum Coleman to thank for keeping the game tied after producing some fine 1 on 1 stops to keep the scores level. Midway through the half Tynewydd won a freekick 25 yards out and Lewis Unions wicked technique bambozzled the Rugby 'keeper who couldn't prevent the ball from crossing the line giving the Tynny a 2-1 lead.

With the Rugby boys sensing the game was now slipping away from them they began to get more desperate and started putting in some hefty challenges and were reduced to 10 men after one of the Rugby players headbutted a player leaving the ref with no option but to send the Rugby player off.

Tynewydd sealed the victory and their place in the quarter finals when Lewis Union scored his second off the match, smartly controlling a cross inside the 6 yard box and swivelling on a 6 pence he lashed the ball into the top corner to end the contest.

Man of the match went to 'keeper Callum Coleman for his string of excellent saves, with notable mentions to Lewis Union for his goals and Craig Rattenbury for his workrate although this was a real team performance and victory with every player doing their bit for the cause.
