THE Finals Day at Wenvoe Castle is usually one of the busiest of the year and this year was no exception with 7 finals to be completed and all to be followed by the traditional Hallett Society League Championship involving a further four matches.

Both the Men’s and Ladies Championship finals are played over 36 holes and were first off to play 18 holes then a quick turnaround before completing second 18 holes in the afternoon.

Matt Mullooly was not only defending his title but looking to complete his hat trick against Terry O’Grady making his first appearance in this final.

It was Terry who managed to build up a lead over the opening holes but couldn’t find a way of shrugging off his experienced opponent who kept on closing the gap and eventually it was all square after the morning session.

The quality of the match was described as exceptional by the referee, club captain Mike Chick, and eventually Matt finally broke through to clinch the title on the 35th and penultimate hole.

The Ladies Championship between Lucy Sellick and Sian Smith was a similar pattern with Lucy developing a lead over the majority of the first 18 holes only to be pegged back by a determined opponent.

Both players produced a high standard of golf worthy of the final including both having birdies on the 12th hole and Sian gradually edged ahead to win the match on the 17th hole.

The rest of the finals were played over 18 holes and generally the finalists had come through a number of knock out stages starting as early as April.

Just reaching the final was in itself an achievement.

The Dragon Trophy was won by Alex Finlay playing exceptionally and consistently well throughout to see off the challenge of Andrew Canning.

Sheila Morrow also played particularly well in winning the Mary Fellows Bowl against Sandra Hathway while Dee Lloyd clinched the Ladies Bronze Championship edging past Nicola Sims in the closing stages of a very tight match.

Rob and Lynda Campbell won the Dr and Mrs A M Jones Cup in a foursomes match against Delyth and Bobby Woodruff. It was yet another very close encounter with victory achieved on the final hole.

An identical result saw Dennis Davies and Rob Gillard win the Harry Regan Foursome Cup Alan Wheatley and John Peters who finally succumbed on the 18th hole.

The trophies were presented to the winner by the individual referee and without exception the finalists were complimented on the spirit in which each game was played.

Compliments were paid to the green staff for the outstanding condition and presentation of the course.

All winners can look forward to their names being engraved on the honours boards while the losing finalists will no doubt reflect but use the experience to go one better in the future.
