THE sun shone brightly on Barry Island on the weekend as Barry Athletic completed their club competitions for the 2018 season.

The finals were orchestrated well by Peter Rogers and the green was prepared to the highest standard to allow all the finalists to display their skills on the silky surface.

An early win for Rowland William Fletcher over a spirited Dylan Brookes in the Club Novice competition started the day.

‘Fletch’ who has shown great improvement over the season dominated after a slow start and ran out winner by 21 shots to 9.

However a young Dylan showed bags of potential through the game and will surely lift the trophy himself before too long.

Club chairman Richard Bowen continued his fine form in the over 60s competitions by defeating Tony Froud 21-4 to lift the John Morris John Memorial Cup and Peter Rogers and Tony McPherson overcame a John Holmes/ Terry Collins combination in the Selwyn Evans pairs competition by a comfortable margin.

The afternoon session saw Peter Rogers overcoming his club skip Robert Horgan 21-10 in an emphatic victory in the club handicap competition, and Tony Froud, bouncing back from his morning defeat, overcame David Wright in the club championship final 21-18 – a new name on the trophy for the blue ribband event that will see Tony progress to the Champion of Champions tournaments next year.

There was good news in the league programme for the club’s two teams as the PG1 side overcame Penarth Windsor by three shots to register the double over their neighbours.

Big wins by Richard Bowen and Robert Horgan’s rinks set up the victory although it took a magnificent shot by Tony Froud on the final end of their match to secure the victory that now guarantees promotion.

The PG2 side tasted victory too defeating Llanbradach on the 4 Wood green by a huge 50 shots with wins for skips Mike Vaughan, John Jones and Albert Mintern and also a welcome, long overdue win for Paul Webley after his injury hit season.

This victory means the club will have their representative sides in the top division of both Private Greens leagues next season and it is a fantastic achievement for skipper Mike Vaughan in his year of captaincy to record this success on the green after the huge amount of work he has put in this year.
