A rearranged CML game was played at Cadoxton against Rhoose with the home side looking for revenge from the drubbing away fixture on the all-weather green.

However the visitors adapted to the conditions much better and finished with 11 of the 14 points available.

Don Kuhnell skipped the only winning rink for the home side in a closely fought match.

After 8 ends the score was tied at 4-4.

At this stage they moved ahead with 4 winning ends with one against, to lead 10-5.

The next five ends were taken by the opposition, with the skip playing heavy bowls into the head to turn over the good heads held, through the accuracy of Jim Stacey.

They improved to 13 -10 in front. During the remaining ends, after setting up good heads, good blocking bowls were added which frustrated the opposition, and the lead was regained.

Kelvin Chedgzoy seemed to be heading for a win with a11-4 lead after 11 ends.

The next end stopped the run with a ‘5’ against and two further losing ends took away the advantage 11-12. A ‘4’ in reply followed by three singles regained the advantage, but the final three ends were won by the visitors with a ‘4’ on the last to tie the score.

Howard Craven won 6 ends against 5 of the first eleven ends to tie the score at 11-11.

From then on the visitors took over and only lost on two more ends to win comfortably.

Derek Jeffries rink took a 5-3 lead after 6 ends only to drop a ‘5’ on the next.

After that each side were successful on 7 ends each, but the opposition always stayed slightly in front.

Cadoxton v Rumney – CML 4 (Away)

E Heppenstall, D Sulman, P Ellis, K Chedgzoy 17 – 27

J Stacey, W Craven, I Robertson, D Kuhnell 14 – 21

G Solomon, E Davies, M Curtis, S Clarke 10 – 31

J Papoutsou, A Ralphs, I Heppenstall, D Jeffries 16 - 20

57 – 99

The green at Rumney, the venue of Cadoxton, for their final away fixture, looked like a practice pitch for learner golfers, with divots covering the delivery areas from a previous game.

The green was very tender so the problem was increased as the game progressed.

This prevented the bowl rolling along its normal course.

Unfortunately the home side had better results and were successful n all rinks. Don Kuhnell had success on half of the ends, with his rink, but most of these were singles, whilst the opposition scored five ‘2’s a ‘3’ and a ‘4’ to ensure their success.

Steve Clarke’s rink also found it hard going with scores against of four ‘3’s a ‘4’ and finishing with the ignominy of an ‘8’ on the last.

More big scores against were scored against Kelvin Chedgzoy’s rink which included a ‘5’, amongst five ‘3’s.

Finally Derek Jeffries rink which coped the beat had a ‘5’ against which proved the difference in their four shot defeat.
