IT is with great sadness that the management committee of Cadoxton Barry FC – until now Barry’s second most senior side – have announced the club's withdrawal from the Highadmit South Wales Alliance League Division One as a result of a closed season exodus of players.

Cadoxton Barry will now be concentrating on further developing their promoted Second XI.

And now only senior team in the Vale of Glamorgan League along with their youth team.

The weekly lottery and 100 Club will continue.

And with that thought in mind the side put on an encouraging display in their first match of the Vale of Glamorgan League season.

Drifters Vale of Glamorgan League Division One

Tynewydd Inn 4-4 Cadoxton Barry FC

Rowlands, Yeoman 2, Ackerman

No I'm not talking about the famed singing group or the early trading name of the Shadows. I'm actually talking about the role of the wind in an opening season game which saw the return to this Division of both combatants for the first time in a number of season's – Tynny from above and CB from below.

Despite playing uphill and against a warm but swirling wind CB started on the front foot, though, in a breakaway, Kinch, in the CB goal had to tip a Tynny shot over the bar. Then Kinch cleared long to create the pressure that earned CB a corner that started a bit of goalmouth pinball ending with the home keeper making an excellent reaction clearance off his own line.

And a further shot from captain/manager, Ackerman went just wide before a long Tynny clearance saw a misunderstanding between 'keeper and defender allow the Tynny forward to nip in to give the visitors a surprise lead against the run of play. Back came CB but Yeoman was just off side when in a good position.

But the goal had lifted the Inn and they attacked once more down the left from where they doubled their lead with an excellent goal from the narrowest of angles.

But Tynny seemed to sit back, perhaps feeling that their lead was comfortable enough, allowing CB to mount a storming finish to the first half as a ball in from the left allowed Rowlands to stoop low to head home. And then it was Jenkinson providing the perfect through ball for Yeoman who, following a bit of ball trickery, drove home to level the scores up just before the interval.

Though the wind was still swirling during the second half, it had slightly changed direction and was not as helpful to CB as it had been to Tynny.

Yet it was to play a major role in three of the four second half goals – the first of which was a lofted Tynny free kick from distance.

Kinch seemed to have it covered until a gust lifted it over his head and into the net. CB immediately found the opposition net but it was ruled out for off side.

Then the wind drift factor came into play once more, this time helping to curl a Tynny cross towards the far post into the net to double the lead for a second time in the match.

Nonetheless, it was a quality goal.

Not wishing to be too one sided Mariah then decided to play a role in CB's second come back. An attack down the left found Ackerman who similarly tried a cross to the far post. The wind gusted right on cue to turn a possible goal into a stylish looking certain goal.

All the pressure was now with CB but they did leave themselves open to the occasional breakaway where Dawson was often called upon to use his tidying up skills.

However, the pressure set up a number of goalmouth scrambles, the ball coming out from one of them to Yeoman who turned his marker before firing home, this time without the help of the wind.

With 15 minutes still on the clock CB continued to press for a winner, but all credit goes to a resolute Tynny defence who met the challenge to cling on to a hard earned point.

A club spokesman said: "Following the player exodus which resulted in the withdrawal of CB's South Wales Alliance League side, this match for the club's only remaining senior side was a crossroads for the team and the club.

"Whilst the result was more than satisfactory, the most important thing to come out of it is the feeling that the club may have found a pathway beyond that crossroads that leads towards a more hopeful future."
