ON Wed, 8th Aug, Sully Sports Men’s Bowls team hosted neighbours Penarth seeking to do the double over them in the Munroe Cup.

But with both sides winning two rinks, it was Penarth who emerged victorious with a 75-65 aggregate win.

A Collard’s rink got in front with a 2 on the 1st end, but the visitors took the lead on the 3rd end, and good consistent bowling saw them steadily build their lead throughout the game to register a 25-9 win.

K Roman’s rink won the opening two ends with singles, and disastrously suffered a 3 and 6 shot loss on the next 2 ends.

They then took control to win 9 of the next 12 ends, to lead by 2 shots going into the final two ends, but their failure to score heavily on any end, proved decisive, as back came Penarth to score 6 shots and clinch the win 20-16.

B Brown’s rink were in front from the 1st to the 8th end, before the lead changed hands 4 times up till the final end when the scores were level at 17-17.

The dramatic final end saw the Sports conjured up the winning shot for a 18-17 win.

C Coomber’s rink led from start to finish, but a mid-game fightback by the visitors, pegged the score back to 11-8, before the home rink the Sports re-established their rhythm to win comfortably by 22-13.

Rink Scores: A Fitt, D Burbridge, A Middleton, A Collard 9-25; M Morgan, M Stafford, R Giddings, K Romans 16-20; P Holland, B Daniel, C Spillane, G Brown 18-17; P Collier, R Knight, G Currie, C Coomber 22-13.

Saturday, 11th Aug saw Cardiff Athletic as the Sports latest PG1 opponents, and the visitors reeked revenge on the Sports for their earlier defeat at the Arms Park. The Sports could only manage a win on 1 rink, going down heavily on the 3 others, to lose on aggregate by 38-81.

After the recent long spell of sunny, hot, dry weather, last Saturday’s game was played in wet conditions, with heavy rain for much of the time, and in one break for heavy rain, the possibility of abandoning the game was seriously considered.

C Coomber’s rink went down 10-25, R Matthews’ rink lost 7-22, G Brown’s rink lost 6-22, and the Sports only success was on L Romans rink who triumphed 15-12.

The Sports’ next fixture is away to Whitchurch Hospital on Sat 25th Aug in the PG1s.

The following Wed friendly has been called off and members are urged to play any outstanding Club Cup competitions instead.

All the Sully Sports members wish all the best to Sylvia Phillips and Mary Dare, who play in the County Pair’s Finals at the Rhoose Bowls Club, with the semis on the evening of 28th Aug, and the final on 29th Aug.
