* Facing the prospect of having an oil and chemical storage depot sited within 300 metres of their homes, a group of local residents have formed an action committee to fight the proposals. * Barry’s glory days as the coal exporting epicentre of the British Empire and the magical playground for countless thousands of day visitors has come and gone, but the town was still equipped to satisfy the 21st Century’s thirst for leisure facilities . . . That was the stirring message proclaimed by local historian Professor Dai Smith at the opening of the Barry Chamber of Trade and Commerce tourism seminar this week.

* Eight-year-old Claire Louise Webber dressed up as an "Interflora Bouquet of Flowers" to win top prize while on a recent holiday at Pontin’s Brean Sands holiday centre in Somerset. Clare of Montgomery Road won the weekly Calippo creative costume contest and was presented with an inscribed trophy.
