EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 29, 1963:
• 36-year-old Thomas James Stacey of Borough Avenue, was delighted when he received a letter on Tuesday morning informing him that he had won a Morris Mini- Minor car in a national hair cream slogan competition, and what colour would he like? To share his pleasure was his vivacious wife Jean and their two sons Jeffrey, aged 12, and Michael, aged five, who are very excited about the news.
• In an orgy of vandalism, damage estimated at well over £200 was wreaked at Barry Island at the weekend. Corporation workmen reporting for duty at the Island on Monday found three large automatic weighing machines smashed beyond repair and considerable damage to the “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” tableau, which is a feature of this year’s illuminations.
• 17-year-old Joyce O’Shea, daughter of Mrs and Mrs C O’Shea of Wenvoe Terrace, was awarded a silver cup and first prize for public speaking at the National Summer School of the Band of Hope and Temperance Union held at Eastwood Grange, Derbyshire.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of September 1, 1988:
• A key £2.8m contract in Welsh Water’s £12m project to raise bathing water quality a Barry – a 2km underwater pipeline which will carry pre-treated sewage out to sea – has been awarded to Alfred McAlpine Services and Pipelines. On-shore work at Barry has been under way since February last year.
• Tivoli Bingo Hall regular Jo Campbell of Cae Glas, Barry, celebrated her recent success in winning £26,500 in a national bingo game with the Deputy Mayor of Barry, Cllr Brinley Lane, the Deputy Mayoress, Maureen Lane and bingo hall manager Len Robinson. The 62-year-old Barry grandmother is a care assistant at the Gwalia Home for the Elderly at The Parade.
• Following the switch-on of the latest addition to Barry Island’s illuminations at the weekend, a leading Vale borough councillor revealed that Whitmore Bay will be the focus next year for a number of environmental improvements.
