Extracts from the Barry & District News of August 1, 1963:

•Fears about the future of Barry Docks were largely dispelled during the past week by a proposal by the British Transport Board, British Railways and the National Coal Board to concentrate coal shipments in South Wales at Barry and Swansea. Coal shipments will be diverted from Cardiff and Newport to Barry, and the plan therefore rejects the Rochdale Committee proposal to close Barry Docks.

•The Mayor’s Fund for the Freedom from Hunger Campaign has been greatly enhanced during July by the magnificent work of the members of Cadoxton Townswomen’s Guild who have already started collecting for their next donation. While many organisations are planning events for the autumn and winter, the need for others is not forgotten by the children and works.

•Police-Sergeant Kenneth Abraham, who has been sergeant in charge of Cadoxton Police Station since last October, has been promoted inspector. He will take up his duties in the Ton Pentre Divisional Office on August 19.

Extracts from the Barry & District News of August 4, 1988:

•A bid to build 15 industrial units on the ‘only green site left in Cadoxton’ has been greeted by a storm of protests from residents and is to be the subject of a site visit by the Vale borough councillors. The scheme is on three-and-a-half acres of Associated British Ports land between Cardiff Road and the former bed of the River Cadoxton, which has been described as ‘waste ground’. It is close to Morlais Street and Spring Road.

•Planning officers of the Vale borough council have welcomed plans by a major food company to demolish their existing store in Barry and replace it with a smaller purpose-built unit representing a ‘vast improvement’ in design and layout. Work is expected to start this month to demolish the 55,740 sq ft Presto store off Palmerston Road.

•Children of Romilly Infants’ School presented baskets of flowers to teachers Nita Dally, of Lakeside, Barry, and Jean Harman, of Crossfield Road, Barry, who are retiring from the staff after 27 and 15 years’ service respectively.
