* The Pontypridd Road tip is back in the news, this time because of the terrible smell it is giving off. For the last three weeks residents in the area have been unable to open any windows because of the smell, and some people have not been able to leave their houses.

* Former Welsh International Alf Sherwood, who became a scout for Hereford United after his two year spell as manager of Barry Town came to an end, is likely to give up football altogether.

* The Miss Barry Beauty Competition held at the Merrie Friars Ballroom on Saturday was won by Marilyn Samuel, of Cwmbran, who is the current Miss TWW.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 31, 1988:

* Police objections to the renewal of 2am licences at Barry nightspots and restaurants have been branded as ‘unfair’ and unacceptable’ by solicitors opposing a total ban on late-night opening. "We have every sympathy with the people who suffer from lawlessness in Barry, but this sort of blanket ban is unfair and against the rules of natural justice," Geoff Thomas told the Vale Public Entertainment Licensing Sub-Committee.

* Making her debut in the world of competitive music, 10-year-old Barry girl Veronica Lloyd-Richards surprised herself and her parents by taking one of the top honours in the Mid Somerset Festival of Music, Speech and Drama.

* Barry Boys’ Comprehensive School pupil Sy Joshua has been picked for the Welsh schools’ under-16 hockey squad to play England, Scotland and Ireland in a quadrangular tournament at the Linwood Sports Centre, Glasgow from April 11-13.
