NOW that a sugar tax on fizzy drinks has been announced, we need to see some clarity from the Government on whether this unfair tax will be extended to yoghurts, milkshakes, chocolate, and breakfast cereals.
The reason for this is that one of the Government’s own advisors last week said he thought that a sugar tax should be extended to all sugary products.
The Department for Health were forced to respond by saying there were “no plans” for an extension of the tax.
Saying there were “no plans” isn’t quite the same as saying it will never happen. We call on the Government to provide some clarity on this important issue.
If they are actively looking at the possibility of extending this tax, then they need to say so. A tax on breakfast cereals would be unacceptable to most people.
People in Barry, Rhoose and Sully pay enough taxes already. We do not want a tax on food.
