IN response to Richard Bertin’s letter on Great Barrians here is my list of great sporting Barrians.
I am defining a Barrian, as someone who was born in Barry, had their formative years in Barry, or lived in Barry while at their best. Here's my selection.
1. Dai Rees, golfer. Ryder Cup captain and BBC Sportsman of the Year 1957.
2. Gus Risman, Rugby League legend captain of Great Britain.
3. Bob John, footballer. Arsenal stalwart winner of three League titles and one FA Cup.
4. Steve Jones, athlete. World Record Marathon runner.
5. David Davies, swimmer, Double Olympian. Winner of silver and bronze medals.
6. Stephen Dodds. Golfer winner of The Worlds Pairs Competition.
7. Andrew Selby amateur boxer. Rated number one Flyweight in the world.Two European gold’s and World Silver.
8. John Cook, rode Specify to Grand National victory.
9. Derek Tapscott footballer. Prolific goal scorer for Wales, Arsenal and Cardiff City.
10. Lee Selby boxer. Dedicated British and Commonwealth Champion. Best still to come.
