LAST week, Plaid Cymru revealed that Wales has some of the lowest levels of doctors per head than most of Europe. Only Slovenia, Romania and Poland have fewer doctors per head of the population than us.
The Labour Government is planning to centralise some emergency hospital services here because of a lack of staff. If we are to deliver safe and sustainable NHS services then ensuring that we have enough doctors to do the job is essential.
Plaid Cymru has proposed ambitious plans to train and recruit a thousand extra doctors to Wales’ NHS. By introducing financial incentives to encourage graduate doctors to stay and work in Wales, by increasing the capacity of Welsh medical schools and by increasing our efforts to recruit from other EU countries we can help build a safe and sustainable NHS.
