LAST year a record 989 million animals were slaughtered for food in the UK, according to government figures. Rather than wandering around an idyllic rural farmyard, the vast majority of these animals were reared in barren, crowded factory farms and lived painfully short lives. For the sake of these animals, I urge all of your readers to give up meat for National Veggie Month this March by signing up for Animal Aid's ‘Big Veg Pledge' at www.veggiemonth.com. Everyone who takes part will receive all the information and support they need to go meat-free, as well as the knowledge that they are helping to stop the suffering of farmed animals.
